Elias Martin, View of Hanover Square from the Norrrrrth, 1769 (oil on canvas, 176 x 209mm)

This lively and unusual view, looking southwards from Harewood Place, was painted one year after the Swedish artist arrived in London, and took up residence in neighbouring Mill Street, south-east of St. George’s Hanover Square. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1770. See The London Gardener (vi: 50-59) for a history of Hanover Square Gardens.
